Pather Panchali is a 1955 Indian drama film directed by Satyajit Ray. Based on the first two volumes of Bibhutibhushan Banerjee's novel of the same name, it tells the story of Apu and his family in rural Bengal, between 1947 and 1964. The film offers an insight into the lives of people living in poverty in India through Apu's innocent eyes. It won international acclaim, notably at Cannes and Venice film festivals.[1] The Apu Trilogy is often credited with bringing Indian cinema to broad international attention. Its influence has been felt in the works of many later directors including Martin Scorsese, James Ivory and Wes Anderson. Pather Panchali (1955), Aparajito (1956), and Apur Sansar (1959) form the Apu Trilogy. In 1991, the Government of India selected it for UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme.[2] It was one of two films from India on the list, along with Rangoli.[3] The first part of Pather Panchali depicts Apu's childhood in a rural Bengali village, as well as his Aunt Haraprasad's love for him. The child is almost an extension of the aunt. During this segment, we see him interact with his family, play with his friends and with a stray dog and stalk a goose with the help of a bamboo pole. Some of his friends tease him for being too attached to Haraprasad; they even call her "mother". The film then cuts to Apu has grown up into an adolescent living in Calcutta. He falls in love with Durga (Madhabi Mukherjee), an unmarried young girl employed as a maid in the family of Chandramohan Chatterjee, a professor at Jorasanko Thakur Bari High School in Calcutta's Garden Reach area. Durga is already in love with Gora (Subir Banerjee), a young man of Apu's age, whose family had earlier taken care of Aunt Haraprasad when she was ill. A new neighbour, the ascetic scholar Indir Thakrun (Karuna Banerjee) comes to live next door. She punctures Apu's ego by showing interest in his education and upbringing only so that he can appreciate the finer things in life. Apu agrees to work hard at school so that he can get a good job. In the final scene of the first part, Haraprasad tells Indir that she is happy to be free from worrying about feeding Apu or sending him to school. She has saved enough money to buy a good house in Calcutta with which she can provide dowry for her younger daughter who is soon to be married. Haraprasad also reveals that this was her plan all along: she sent Apu off so that he could earn enough for them later on. The second part opens with Gora's marriage, where the bride dies shortly after due to heart failure. Gora is rendered mute due to shock and becomes an alcoholic, while Durga continues working at the Chatterjee house as a maid. cfa1e77820
